Piano audio to MIDI: what converts well
Piano audio to MIDI works best on a recording of one piano playing on its own. A grand or an upright both work, and so does the audio from a digital piano. A close microphone in a quiet room gives cleaner notes than a phone at the back of a hall, where room echo and noise can add extra notes or blur repeated ones.
If you play a digital piano with a USB or MIDI output, record MIDI straight from the instrument instead. That captures exactly what you played. Converting audio is for recordings you already have.
Solo piano or piano in a song
The converter writes down every note it hears. On a solo piano recording, that is the piano. In a full song, the vocals, bass, guitar and drums end up in the same MIDI as the piano, because the converter does not separate instruments. If you can get the piano on its own track, convert that. For a whole song, see the Song to MIDI page for what to expect.
Sustain pedal and thick chords
The free converter writes notes only. It does not add sustain pedal events to the MIDI. Note lengths come from the sound it hears, so with a lot of pedal some notes can end earlier or later than the keys were released.
In thick chords, a note can be missed and an extra one can appear. Step through the chord in the note list, then fix it in your music app.
Questions
Can I convert a piano MP3 to MIDI?
Yes. Choose the MP3 here and convert it in your browser. WAV and the other formats listed on the MP3 to MIDI page work too.
Does the MIDI include the sustain pedal?
No. The free converter writes notes with their pitch, timing, length and velocity. It does not add sustain pedal events.
Can it pull the piano out of a full song?
No. It does not separate instruments. Everything it hears in the mix ends up in one track of notes.
I have a digital piano. Should I convert its audio?
If it has a USB or MIDI output, record MIDI from it directly. That is more exact than converting a recording. Use this page for piano recordings you already have.
